A blogging event ‘Book Review Day’
This month I am reviewing a book called “Peace by Piece”.
The editor of this book Victoria Villasenor runs a social enterprise called Global Words, which is a Literary Consultancy, who work with under-represented communities all over Nottinghamshire to get the stories that you don’t get to hear from everyday people.
This book is a collection of short stories from women who use the Women’s Centre in Nottingham, who are dealing with issues in their own lives and communities. They are women’s own stories.
The Women have shared personal and intense moments in their lives.
I found that most of the stories show issues, which women have had to face either in the past, or in today’s society.
Some of the topics the stories portray, are the ‘coming of age’ in past era’s and how women have had to fight for their beliefs.
The effects of war in different cultures, how this has imposed upon the lives of women, followed by the price of freedom and the constraints of marriage.
The stories describe the oppression of discrimination, the stigma of single parenthood, the trauma of mental illness and shows ways in which women have coped with society’s expectations and ideals.
The stories also show the amount of strength women have, to be able to flee persecution from corrupt governments and the courage they have found, to choose freedom over abusive relationships.
The female authors, in most of the stories have reached out to the reader giving words of inspiration and hope. In the stories the women have shown how they’ve dealt with a situation. They also describe the breakdown of the thought processes, which the women have used to help them change their lives around. They’ve shown how self-acceptance can bring happiness and relaxation.
I couldn’t possibly pick out a favourite story, as I feel that all of the women’s stories are special and unique.
I enjoyed reading this book, as the short memoir stories are very well written and are exclusive. I recommend reading it.
All proceeds from this book will go to charity. If you would like more info. on obtaining a copy of ‘Peace by Piece’, then please click here.
